The creation of Bartering in the Pumpkin Patch was inspired by a unique theme for a group show which developed around the interpretation of 5 assigned objects. The 5 objects consisted of a piece of burlap, a string, a feather, a box of crayons, and a glass jar containing kidney beans.

Artists were to depict all 5 objects, interweaving them into an art creation to create or represent some of the key elements of art which are line, shape, form, texture and colour.

What led me to this subject came by accident. Literally, in looking for my autumn wreath, the scare crow fell off a shelf and smacked me in the head.  Seeing the old torn burlap shirt on the scarecrow, I immediately saw a painting.

Colour: The vibrant hues on the patch on the jeans represent the box of crayons.

Shape: Small in detail but emphasizing the whimsical friendly nature of the scene is represented in the scarecrow’s eyes by the kidney shaped beans.

Form: The glass jar was represented in a different form, as the glass itself was depicted as a glass marble. The marble is the object of barter, as the crow negotiates for a pumpkin with the scarecrow.

Texture: Scarecrow’s burlap shirt shows the rough texture and is a contrast with the smoothness and softness of the feathers on the mischievous crow.

Line: The string has been represented by an old broken fence wire. The wires offer direction and guides the viewer through the artwork.

Every hidden detail serves to invite the viewer to uncover the multiple layers of meaning within.
