Sherry Santarpia, a distinguished contemporary artist currently based in Halifax, NS, has captivated audiences with her vivid compositions and unique perspective on everyday scenes.
While Sherry always possessed a creative spirit, it was the inspiring environment of her high school art classes in Aldergrove, BC, that truly ignited her desire to pursue art. This newfound passion guided her through her academic pursuits, culminating in a Bachelor of Education with a major in Fine Art. Despite diverging into other professional avenues after graduation, Sherry's love for painting never waned, and in 2016, she returned to her canvas with renewed vigour.
Her work often draws inspiration from the photographs she takes during her travels, capturing moments that resonate with her through their light, reflection, or striking contrasts. Sherry's choice of subject matter frequently features isolated objects, such as bicycles or boats, paired with bright highlights on water or illuminated pathways, which she meticulously transforms into vibrant compositions. Her creative process begins with reference photos, which she then crops and manipulates to create compelling compositions, introducing surprising new hues, breathing life into her canvases.
Since her return to painting, Sherry has honed her technique under the guidance of notable artists: Bhat Boy of Ottawa, ON, and Ali Kay of Chattanooga, TN. This experience has allowed her to develop a distinctive, colourful style that resonates with those who view her work. Sherry's art has been showcased in several venues across Ottawa, including Life of Pie, the Old Ottawa South Community Centre, and the GNAG Arts Show & Sale. Her captivating pieces have also been featured in the Square Foot Show February 2025, an online exhibition that celebrates artists globally.
Sherry is excited to be joining the ART 1274 Hollis Cooperative in Halifax, viewing this as an opportunity to connect with new audiences and fellow creatives. Through her paintings, Sherry aims to comfort and inspire, reflecting her belief in the transformative power of art in society.
